Coffee Talk

I don't know about you, but I LOVE coffee! Every since I lived in Italy, I have been obsessed and perhaps tried just about every kind of coffee there is, but I keep come back to the good ole days of the Napoli cafes! And with my little "bialetti" stove top coffee maker, I love filling the Alamo with the scents of Italian espresso. I bought the original coffee maker in Naples a few years ago and just last week, Cloud and Gazelle and I were on a gleaning trip to the Law school near our house and found a "big brother" for our little coffee making friend! Yaay! They love each other and now we can make enough coffee for everyone in the morning after roof yoga sessions!

What's in a Smoothie?

Our housemate, Lemur has made many smoothies. He lives by the motto, a smoothie a day is the only way.

While, I may not have quite the same smoothie obsession as Lemur, lately, I have found the magical joy of smoothie making a wonderful breakfast activity. Fruit in the morning gives you energy and helps your body digest quickly for maximum efficiency and just makes you feel good all day.

Today, Cloud and I made a fabulous breakfast smoothie from the wonderful ingredients in our fridge and pantry almost ALL of which were found in the Trader Joe's dumpster:

6-10 Organic strawberries
2 Organic bananas
a handful of Organic blueberries
a handful of Organic Goji berries
a dash of ground Cayenne Pepper
a dash of Sea salt
1 tablespoon Flaxseed oil
1/2 cup Aloe juice
2 Organic Pears
1 Organic Apple
a handful of Raw sunflower seeds
a handful of Raw almonds
a pinch of Raw sesame seeds

These ingredients were liquified together with ice (and love) in our old fashioned blender and sprinkled with granola and sweet cacao nibs. YUM!! It made for the most unique breakfast I have ever eaten and was the inspiration for this blog!

You Are What You Eat

Welcome to the Bruised Apple Diaries!

We created this blog because we love good food and we love living in New York and we love using things we find in New York to make the good food we love!

First a bit about us: Phoenix came to New York from Atlanta, GA, by way of Beijing, where she lived for the past four years producing theatre and teaching English, among other things. She loves coffee, pizza, and also healthy food. Cloud is a French-American artist and photographer who has lived in the US for several years who loves to chop up fruit and veggies. We both recently found (thanks craigslist!) a magical place in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn to live in a three-story community household with roof access, a huge backyard for gardening surrounded by empty lots of both sides and a Home Depot in our front yard that we affectionately call "the Alamo" where we happily commune with four other interesting souls. Our house includes Phoenix (writer/actor/producer), Cloud (artist/photographer), Osprey (physicist/rock climber), Lemur (anarchist/DJ), Gazelle (painter/framer), and Raven (social worker/shipmate).

For the past few months, we have found a routine that is extremely motivating and satisfying. Every morning (almost) we get up early (7:30 or 8am)--even though most of us don't have full time jobs. We climb up to our roof (overlooking the Manhattan skyline and the Bed-Stuy Home Depot parking lot) and we stretch and do yoga, taichi, and meditation for about half and hour. After which, we go down to our kitchen stocked with groceries (almost all of which have been found in the dumpsters of our city's supermarkets) and we make the most delicious salads and smoothies and sundries that you can imagine. We sit and chat about life and art and food and coffee and such. Well, today, we thought as we ate our most amazing breakfast and reminisced about the delicious breakfasts and lunches and dinners we have eaten in the past several months and all for FREE--wouldn't it be wonderful to start a blog and share our delicious experience with the world!

So here it is! We will provide an inside look at life in a community environment (the benefits and the struggles), as well as a life of freegan goodness, and fresh fruit and veggie and other delights that we make and enjoy each day here at the Alamo. We will have tales of fantastic parties, improv nights, theatre rehearsals, art exhibits, and gardening tips, and more.

So welcome to our world of bruised apples and broken banana smoothies, of ripe mango and avocado salad, of fresh raw pesto and pasta al dente! All of it free, found, reused, composted, and recycled.

Welcome to the Alamo!
